Detailed System Design

Operators of new container terminals, or those wanting to expand current facilities, can select stack systems and prime movers from a wide variety of available solutions. Each of these options requires a design based on the terminal layout, container flow characteristics, and service level requirements.

To facilitate the design process, TBA has developed the TIMESquare simulation model library. It contains a valid representation of all systems currently available on the market. During the last 10 years, TBA has used TIMESquare in over 100 projects for more than 50 terminals worldwide.

Objective and scope of TIMESquare

TIMESquare standing for Terminal In-depth Models for Evaluation studies is used for design and performance assessment purposes, benefitting new container terminals and terminal extensions.

This simulation model library has been developed for all major container handling systems, including fully automated systems of RMGs and AGVs.

Typical studies with TIMESquare

The range of studies that can be supported with TIMESquare varies from gate analysis via a complete assessment of an active operation to a comparison of different handling systems on performance levels. Typically TIMESquare supports the following:

Stress tests with maximum load at one or more key stages of the operation, such as a vessel, gate, or rail handling

Weeklong tests in which all typical operations performed during an average or peak week are taken into account, including housekeeping
