Container Terminal Design: Early Assistance in Design and Redesign Processes

Container Terminal development projects have strategic importance. Many decisions have to be made about layout design, control algorithms, and equipment numbers and characteristics. Simultaneously, time and cost budgets need to be considered and design decisions must be evaluated constantly. To assist these processes and to ensure that terminal projects achieve required performance within a given time and cost framework, TBA developed a systematic design approach. This has been carried out for over 500 design projects and for more than 200 terminals.

This design project is also available on a variety of equipment including AGVs, straddle carriers, RTGs, mobile harbour cranes, trucks and many more.

TBA’s container terminal design project delivers with the following approach:

Capacity Analysis- Static models and the Trafalquar simulation model are used to analyse the throughput capacity of berth, yard, transport systems and rail facilities.

Design of system alternatives- Layout configurations such as allocation of space are carried out, ensuring all key terminal functions have an efficient location while keeping traffic flow fluid.

Assessment of system alternatives- Simulation models are used to assess whether system alternatives perform at the required levels.

Financial analysis- A comparison of running costs are made between the operation and investments required over the lifetime of various system alternatives.
