Rajant - Mission Critical Port Connectivity

Rajant Corporation is the exclusive provider of private Kinetic Mesh® wireless networks designed to thrive in mobility-driven industrial environments – “living” mesh networks that move with and adapt to diverse and evolving connectivity demands. The self-healing, peer-to-peer mesh networks enable anytime, anywhere connectivity allowing people and assets to move and communicate simultaneously while maintaining real-time access to vital information and applications. Kinetic Mesh networks support Wi-Fi and use Ethernet for easy integration with satellite, fiber, cellular, LTE and other fixed wireless configurations.  Military-grade security provides robust mesh network protection against malicious attacks without degrading network performance. With significant performance gains over traditional mesh and fixed wireless technologies, Rajant is quickly becoming the mobile wireless network of choice for mission critical networks that require all assets – fixed and mobile – to be connected and transmitting reliably 24/7.

As modern port terminal and logistics facilities try to keep pace with the growing container traffic and security concerns, the demand for always-on and highly reliable network communications becomes paramount.   The communications requirements to support the conglomeration of ships, cargo, heavy equipment, truck fleets, and personnel traversing port environments require a mobile infrastructure that is both scalable and reliable with high bandwidth and low latency to ensure that communications are real-time and can impact improve productivity while streamlining operations.  The growth in autonomous equipment including UAVs and UGVs, increased safety protocols, Wi-Fi asset tracking, edge applications, and advanced surveillance systems place greater demands on communications.  With a no single point of failure platform, Kinetic Mesh networks are deployed worldwide and customers are experiencing the benefits of our InstaMesh® proprietary software to deliver an unparalleled level of wireless performance in the industrial marketplace.

Bring IoT to Life with a “Network of Things”

Deploying Rajant’s ruggedized multi-radio BreadCrumb® nodes, equipped with InstaMesh® networking software, directly on a port asset – be it a vehicle, quay crane, camera pole, or drone – essentially turns that asset into a network node.

BreadCrumbs are able to communicate peer-to-peer via multiple simultaneous connections, sharing information back and forth in a fully mobile, highly resilient web of communications. What makes a Kinetic Mesh network ideal for today’s port operators?

Seamless Integration with Existing Investments
Kinetic Mesh is designed to flawlessly integrate with the diverse array of existing network infrastructure that your port is already leveraging, including satellite, fiber, copper, cellular, LTE, 3G/4G, PTP, and PtMP wireless.

Total Mobility, Port-Wide
BreadCrumbs maintain hundreds of peer connections simultaneously, even while in motion, and autonomously make new connections to other nodes as they come into range. No connections need to be broken for new ones to be made.

If one path becomes blocked or interference is identified from container movement, equipment movement, or other operations occurring throughout the portside, InstaMesh dynamically redirects traffic over another available path, with the network automatically optimizing itself as conditions naturally change.

Built-In Redundancy to Maximize Port Uptime
With node- and frequency-level redundancy and no LAN controller, Rajant’s network removes any single point of failure and gives data hundreds of potential paths to uphold continuous mission-critical connectivity.

Its ability to maintain multiple simultaneous connections virtually eliminates downtime, with rapid scalability to hundreds of nodes. In fact, adding more nodes establishes more pathways to increase network resilience.

Military-Grade Security
Rajant’s network offers robust security capabilities, including multiple cryptographic options and configurable per-hop, per-packet authentication to protect your critical port data.

In addition to supporting efficiency and productivity gains, this technology can transform a port’s network into a strategic asset by providing the port-wide access, reach, and mobility needed to support next-generation applications. For example, by equipping autonomous or semiautonomous equipment with BreadCrumb nodes and device-specific command software, operators can communicate with and control remote equipment such as quay cranes and unmanned ground and aerial vehicles (UGVs and UAVs). It also enables real-time tracking of low power Wi-Fi asset tags so that containers, equipment, and people can be located instantaneously, improving port efficiency, security, and safety.

Enabling the Connected Port of Things

As global trade increases at an exponential rate, ports are in turn thriving. However, some aspects of ports are stuck in the past, with most container ports still operating gigantic container yards manually.

Rethinking Port-Wide Autonomy

This paper details why achieving port-wide autonomy requires capabilities that are beyond Wi-Fi and LTE’s reach, and what operators really need in a wireless infrastructure to effectively enable autonomous operations port-wide.
